Yes, now I see - we are visiting Jan Nielsen.

Jan is known from the magazine High Fidelity where he does a lot of reviews and articles. I'll reckon he will show up in the thread sooner or later.

In the couch from the left: Jan, Peter and myself. (With the remote to Pacs camera.)

A preamp. Audio Research SP16:

The small box on the top contains a Lundahl stepup-transformer for the cartridge.

The top shelves in Jans rack contains one more source. A very nice one I should add:

Accuphase DP77

The vinyl spinner was just simply "too much", wiht the SPU and everything. As far as I remember the SPU go as far back as 1957! This just to let the younger forum members know a little about the time perspective here .

Yes Micke, it's not necessarily so that the evolution allways go in the right direction. Old stuff can often show better results than the newer ones.

Poweramps are nices. We have one of the really tuff ones here - the pure class A Accuphase A-60:

Another nice product.

The Accuphase drove the upper register in the speakers. For the lower frequencies Jan han been experimenting a bit with the necessary compensation/ equalizing for the open baffels. To this he's using the Behringer DQX 2496 - a digital cross over with allmost unlimited possibilities.

Bernt, please excuse me, but I'm still transfixed by "The Monster" ...

Jan has put up several pictures from his DIY project on the DIY forum - see this thread: http://www2.hififorum.nu/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21559&whichpage=7

He has allso described his project on his own site - here: http://www.soundimage.dk/Analog-1.htm

This is very interesting reading

Yes, the vinylsound from this set up is definately among the best I have ever experienced. When Jan builds anything, it look to me as if he seeks the upper limits.

As it was playing this day the reproduction was open and relasec with a big soundstage - wide and deep. Excellent focus and a very stable.

Jan told os, that he is planning a RIAA stage with LCR-transformer modules from Stevens & Billington.
http://www.stevens-billington.co.uk/riaapage.htm
This could very well be another interesting devolopment.

Power for the woofer then? Here Jan is using ICE-power - ASP250 modules in a discrete black box.

The two mono tube poweramps are DIY-copies of the Audio Note Keegon. Tubes are ECC81, 5687 and two 300B in a parallell single
ended coupling. This is very much a winning concept, but in fact these tube mono block has been retired when the Accuphase A-60 entered the stage.

- Mentioning Steven-Billington would'nt it be an improvement to use the Stevens&Billington's TX-103, which has been very much praised

Btw : Bent Audio has it as a DIY kit or a finished product - and it is allso included in the Hagerman, Trumpet Phono

Is this a pair of TB 4" on the table or is it 3"?

Give my regards to Jan and tell him that the quartz roch shoud be crushed and then placed in somthing which will absorb vibrations. I wondered a little about how this quartz is working, and will try to get hold a few pieces to try it out myself.

In each speaker there are 6 Peerless 12" woofers 315 SWR.

The midrange is covered by a 10" PHL 3451, and the treble is a ribbon from Aurum Cantus. Boht elements has 102dB sensitivity.

The PHL mid uses no high-pass XO but rolls of gently all by itself.

Yes, you are right Eliot. Sure it is a DeZorel! We still have not reach to the power supply cleaning - but there are a few other alternatives.

I will continue with the speakers. I succeded int getting behind the speakers to shoot a few pictures without the damping material.

As you can se it is an open baffel - even in the midrange.

The cross-over looks like 12dB HP for the ribbon and 6 dB low-pass for the midrange - right Jan?

The ribbon driver is very good - it's the Aurum Cantus G3.

Now we will check what can be done with the mains power supply. As Eliot mentioned the DeZorel we will start with that one.

Wha it does, I can not say. When we were there it did absolutely nothing, as it was not connected.

But this one was:

Nordost Thor.
